Netflix's own On Demand service was repeatedly delayed, from the end of 2005 to at least 2007 due to licensing problems with the studios. The Hollywood studios have been dragging their feet on licensing their back catalogues, so no online company has yet been able to (legally) offer the variety of content which consumers demand.
Content is king, and until the studios get their act together and solve this licensing problem, online legal downloads won't take off--in the US or Australia, or anywhere else.
Online Rental Players Face Barriers in Going Digital
In a recent conference call with analysts, US DVD rental giant Netflix, CEO, Reed Hastings, noted several barriers to online rental players in going digital.
