It's a clear result of media overabundance, and an interesting article. We were never as bad as the one Netflix subscriber who rented Maria Full of Grace for over two years, but didn't watch the gritty drama because she “wasn't in the right mood.”
To be fair, the DVD rental companies don't want this to happen to you, as people will tend to get frustrated and reduce or cancel their subscriptions, so they do spend considerable funds and effort trying to make film recommendations you'll truly enjoy.
