The analysts believe that online DVD rental, still relatively young, will consolidate to only a few players. We think that after the major merger between the UK market leaders Lovefilm and Screenselect, there will still be several other strong options. Blockbuster of course will remain a strong second, with several medium-sized alternatives. Many people fed up with poor customer service sometimes experienced at the larger companies will prefer a slightly smaller option, so there should be a steady stream of trickle down customers, even after the market has reached saturation, which is still several years off.
In Australia, we believe the same trends are at work, and the online firms will eventually drive the rental shops out of business, or at least limit them to urban, high traffic areas. But this is all to the good for the online DVD rental customer, as members continue to flock to this, the future of the industry. We do think there will be more consolidaion in the online DVD realm as well, as the analysts postulate, but that the current major players, Bigpond, Quickflix, and Webflicks, will keep going strong (and independent) for many years to come.

Econsultancy postulates that bricks and mortar DVD rental firms are being ground down by their oneline-only competition. The article and topic from this UK market research firm are topical, as the latest casualty, ChoicesUK, goes into administration. Choices UK had 170 shops and 1,800 employees.The analysts believe that online DVD rental, still relatively young, will consolidate to only a few players.
