Can Anything Save the Video Rental Store

This in-depth piece by the UK's Guardian asserts that nothing will save the high street video store.

DVD rentals plummeted from 3.87 million copies per week in February 2005 to 2.6 million a year later, largely due to the closure of 238 independent high street rental shops. The elimination of the “rental window”--a period of time when films were available for rent only, has hurt the industry, as now people can generally buy the discs on the same day. The latest nail in the coffin is a deal by Universal Studios to offer their latest blockbuster King Kong, on DVD and video-on-demand to Lovefilm on the same day.

We agree, and don't see much of a future for video stores in Australia or across the West, especially when they're also being hit with the introduction of video kiosks in high foot traffic areas. The future is in online DVD rental via the post, and several years down the road, video-on-demand over the internet.
